What Are Exports?
Exports are goods and services produced in one country and sold to customers or businesses in another country. Exports are an important part of international trade because they help a country earn foreign currency, create employment, support industries, and strengthen economic relationships with other nations.
India has a diverse export sector, exporting everything from engineering products and electronics to medicines, textiles, agricultural products, petroleum products, and jewellery. In FY 2024–25, India’s merchandise exports were about US$437.42 billion. Engineering goods were the largest category, while electronics recorded particularly strong growth.

1. Engineering Goods ⚙️
Engineering goods are one of India’s biggest export categories. They include machinery, automobile components, industrial equipment, electrical equipment, and metal products. Engineering goods accounted for around 26.67% of India’s merchandise exports in FY 2024–25.
2. Pharmaceuticals 💊
India is a major supplier of medicines, generic drugs, vaccines, and pharmaceutical ingredients to international markets. Pharmaceutical exports continue to be an important source of India’s global trade strength.
3. Textiles & Apparel 👕
India exports cotton yarn, fabrics, ready-made garments, handloom products, carpets, and other textiles. The textile sector remains an important source of employment and foreign exchange. India’s textile exports, including handicrafts, reached approximately ₹3.16 lakh crore in FY 2025–26.
4. Electronics 📱
Electronic goods have become one of India’s rapidly growing export sectors. Products include mobile phones, electronic components, computers, and other electrical equipment. Electronics exports grew by 32.46% in FY 2024–25, reaching about US$38.58 billion.
5. Agricultural Products 🌾
India exports rice, spices, coffee, tea, cereals, marine products, fruits, vegetables, and processed food. Agriculture contributes significantly to India’s export basket and connects Indian farmers and food-processing businesses with international markets.
6. Gems & Jewellery 💎
India is well known for diamond cutting and polishing as well as gold jewellery manufacturing. Gems and jewellery are exported to markets across the United States, UAE, Hong Kong and other regions.
7. Petroleum Products ⛽
India has significant refining capacity and exports refined petroleum products such as diesel, petrol and other fuels. Petroleum products are among India’s major merchandise exports.

Indian products are exported to markets across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The United States is one of India’s most important export markets, while countries in Europe, the UAE, Africa and Asia are also significant destinations.
